This is not about Courtney Love, I haven’t even listened to her last work (and I don’t think I’m gonna listen to it) and I don’t care if she’s going around all dressed up right now (she was already doing it with Celebrity Skin so what’s the fuss?) or that she learnt how to fight on Twitter, this is about having an icon to look at, an image in your head about what’s going on in female music, a message that girls with red red lipstick wanted to send to the world some time ago.
I was listening to Hole’s Doll Parts last evening and it hit me like a bullet, all the memories about that precise moment in my life, when I was sixteen and Courtney’s video was amazing to look at on tv, it was something so decadent and powerful at the same time you coulnd’t help but listen, even if it was disturbing at times, her suffering, her words, her red red lipstick, everything was there to annoy and hypnotize you. And it was so beautiful.
I was just thinking that we had the Courtneys, and we have the PJs, dressed like whores in a saloon with fake eyelids and I felt a little bit sad because nothing makes me ache so much anymore in music, at least not as much as Doll Parts and C’mon Billy did.
